Introducing The Oklahoma Pagans Unchained Project
Sæl og vel mætt (Hail and well met)!
It is with great pride and purpose that I introduce the Oklahoma Pagans Unchained Project. This initiative is dedicated to empowering and supporting incarcerated Pagans, including Wiccans, Druids, Ásatrúar, and others, by addressing the unique challenges they face in accessing spiritual resources and services.
Our Mission
The Oklahoma Pagans Unchained Project exists to ensure that Pagan individuals in correctional facilities have the tools, knowledge, and support they need to practice their faith with dignity and authenticity. No one should be denied their spiritual path due to a lack of resources or representation, and we are here to change that.
Our Services
1. Ritual and Educational Supplies
Access to items like books, candles, altars, and ritual tools can be restricted for incarcerated individuals, even when the law and facility policy actually enables individuals to have such items. We work to provide these essential supplies in a way that aligns with both institutional guidelines and the wide and varied paths of the Pagans we seek to serve.
2. Off-Site Advocacy
We act as liaisons between correctional facilities, chaplaincy staff, and the Pagan community, ensuring that the rights of incarcerated Pagans are respected. Our advocates help address misunderstandings and promote inclusivity within the system, while ensuring that those seeking a safe space to disclose potential violations are also respected and heard.
3. On-Site Volunteer Support
For those who cannot lead their own rituals or need guidance, we aim to provide trained volunteers to visit facilities and facilitate ceremonies, spiritual counseling, and group services. (NOTE: As of 01-07-2024, we currently have no one available for on-site volunteer services, and are desperately searching for interested individuals!)
Why This Matters
Faith can be a powerful source of healing and transformation, especially for those navigating the challenges of incarceration. Yet, Pagans often face unique barriers in practicing their spirituality, from limited access to sacred items to a lack of understanding from institutional staff. By addressing these gaps, we aim to uplift and empower incarcerated Pagans on their spiritual journeys. In my own journey, I came back to Paganism while incarcerated. In the nearly seven years I was locked up, I saw just how badly non-mainstream religious groups were treated. I also discovered a passion for both teaching and advocacy.
Now, I want to reach out a helping hand to those whose path I've walked. Knowing that someone is out there who understands your beliefs and why they're important to you is an important part of maintaining your humanity in a place that oftentimes strips such things away.
How You Can Help
Our work depends on the support of compassionate individuals and organizations. Here are some ways you can contribute:
Donate: Supply books, tools, or funds to help us reach more people. Our e-mail is listed below, or you can reach out through the blog to find out more.
Volunteer: Assist as an off-site advocate or on-site facilitator. Off-site advocates may be asked to contact facility staff, answer mail from incarcerated individuals, and providing individuals with the information necessary to exercise their rights to free religious expression. On-site facilitators will be required to complete the Oklahoma Department of Corrections requirements for religious volunteers, and will be asked to donate their time to groups in their own area as they are able.
Spread the Word: Share our mission to raise awareness and foster support. We need all the help we can get, as do our incarcerated brethren.
Join the Movement
The Oklahoma Pagans Unchained Project is committed to creating a more equitable and inclusive spiritual environment for incarcerated Pagans. If you or someone you know would benefit from our services—or if you’d like to get involved—please reach out at OkPagansUnchained@gmail.com
Together, we can break down barriers and ensure that every incarcerated Pagan, no matter their circumstances, has the opportunity to connect with their faith.
Thank you for being part of this vital work. Bjartar blessanir til þín og ættingja þinna á nýju ári! (In English, it means "Bright blessings to you and your kindred in the new year!)
